Creating Internal and External WealthMindfulness

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.

Mindfulness: It's about being fully engaged with the present moment – our actions, our surroundings, our bodies.

However, we frequently lose focus, our minds straying to past regrets or future worries. This constant mental drifting fuels anxiety and disrupts our peace of mind. Despite our wandering minds, mindfulness can always bring us back to the present moment.

The best way to understand mindfulness is to experience it firsthand. While its definition may vary slightly across different sources, the core essence remains the same.

Common Types of Mindfulness Practices

Mindfulness, a natural human ability, can be strengthened through consistent practice. Here are a few ways to cultivate it:

  • Active or Passive Meditation:

    Active Meditation
Focus: Using an anchor or repetitive action (breath, mantra, movement) to actively center the mind, often for building concentration.
Examples: Zazen (focused breath), walking meditation, mindful yoga, focusing on a mantra, or using a checklist of sensations.
Benefit: Great for beginners to manage wandering minds and develop discipline; brings awareness to physical tasks.

    Passive Meditation
Focus: Allowing the mind to be free, observing thoughts, feelings, and sensations without judgment or active engagement (non-directive).
Examples: Open awareness, letting the mind wander freely, or simply "doing nothing".
Benefit: Leads to deeper states of relaxation, self-awareness, and spiritual insight, moving beyond initial concentration

  • Mindful Living:

Integrate short moments of mindfulness throughout your day by acknowledging the beauty around you and the things in life you have to be grateful for. Treating the people, animals, plants, and objects around you with kindness and respect. Making eye contact when communicating with another allowing them to feel seen and honored by your presence. Choosing to see others as yourself, mindfully treating them the way you desire to be treated.

  • Conscious Breathing:

Pausing, closing your eyes and focusing on your breath, inhaling through the nose and out through the mouth.
  • Mindful movement:

Combine mindfulness with physical activities through Yoga, Qi Gong, Martial Arts or any sport or hobby that brings you fully into your body and into the moment.

The Benefits of Mindfulness Practice:

When we meditate, it’s important not to fixate on the benefits; instead, we should focus on simply practicing. However, it’s clear that there are benefits, or else people wouldn’t engage in it. By being mindful, we can reduce stress, enhance our performance, gain insight, and increase our awareness by observing our own minds. Additionally, mindfulness helps us pay more attention to the well-being of others. Mindfulness meditation offers us a unique opportunity to suspend judgment and tap into our natural curiosity about how our minds operate. This practice allows us to approach our experiences with warmth and kindness, both toward ourselves and others. Practicing mindfulness over time enables us to access a state of grace, empowering us to rise above the dramas and chaos of daily life. It equips us to make wiser, more discerning decisions—allowing us to consciously respond rather than merely react to what comes our way.
